STARKVILLE, Miss. – Juniors Jenna Caira and Lisaira Daniels received Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Great Lakes Region honors as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on May 19. Caira, the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, was named to the all-region first team, while Daniels earned second team recognition as an outfielder.
Caira led the Orange to its second consecutive BIG EAST Tournament title after allowing just one run and striking out 13 batters in 21 innings of work throughout the tournament. The All-BIG EAST First Team selection was named BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a member of the all-tournament team.
The four-time 2011 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, holds program records in career strikeouts per seven innings pitched (8.25), career wins (69), career games started (100), career strikeouts (756), lowest career opponent batting average (.199) and single season wins (34). This season, she led the BIG EAST in ERA (1.38), opposing batting average (.183), strikeouts (305) and wins (34).
This marks Daniels' second consecutive all-region honor. Throughout the BIG EAST Tournament, she conducted Syracuse's offense contributing to four of the Orange's five runs. She recorded three RBI on four hits and scored one run. The Tampa, Fla. native holds program records in career stolen bases (53) and batting percentage (.361). She also ranks second in career on base percentage (.414) and triples (9). Her 24 stolen bases this season rank second in the BIG EAST.
A total of 258 players from 126 different institutions and 10 NFCA regions comprise this season's regional teams, including first and second teams for each region.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.
Caira, Daniels and the Orange will face No. 22 LSU in the NCAA Regional on Friday, May 20 at 5 p.m. EST at Texas A&M's Aggie Softball Complex
