SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Lauren Penney (Succasunna, N.J.) and senior Evan Stivala (Colts Neck, N.J.), of the Orange track and field team are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of May 2, 2011.
Penney currently ranks third in the BIG EAST and 20th in the nation in the 5,000 meter run. She has qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships this season. At the Stanford Invitational, she broke the school record in the 5,000m run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 16:09.44.
Penney, a history education major, and 37 other members of the Orange will compete at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 6-8 at Villanova.
Stivala recently placed fourth in the high jump in Syracuse's last regular-season meet at the Cornell Big Red Invitational. His jump of 1.89 meters was a personal-best mark for him during outdoor season. As a multi event competitor, he has also participated in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.
Stivala, an anthropology major, earned Fall 2010 Athletic Director's Honor Roll recognition.
