COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Syracuse (45-11) will face No. 18 Texas A&M (42-13) on Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m. EST in the winners bracket of the NCAA Regional at the Aggie Softball Stadium. Live video and live stats of all regional games can be found at Championship Central free of charge.
In its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional, the Orange secured its first NCAA victory yesterday with a 3-0 win against LSU. Texas A&M advanced after cruising past Sacred Heart, 10-2 in six innings, in the second regional game.
In SU's matchup, junior Lacey Kohl hit a three-run homerun in the top of the 11th inning to end a 10 inning scoring drought and send the Orange to the winner's bracket. Junior pitcher Jenna Caira came out on the winning end of an 11 inning pitching battle, striking out 13 batters in her third consecutive shutout. LSU's pitcher fanned 18 Syracuse batters, but Kohl smacked one over the center field fence with two runners on to give SU the win.
That was Kohl's 12th homerun of the season. Her 42 RBI now rank second on the team. Senior Hallie Gibbs, junior Stephanie Watts and Kohl have combined for 36 of SU's 67 homeruns this season.
Junior Lisaira Daniels led SU with two hits in the LSU matchup and was intentionally walked before Kohl stepped to the plate, driving in sophomore Veronica Grant and L. Daniels. Grant started the 11th inning with a single to right field.
The Aggies lead the all-time series between the two teams, 4-0. They last met during the 2006 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Then No. 9/6 Texas A&M came away with a 2-1 win. With Texas A&M's win last night, the Aggies enter the winner's bracket riding a 25 game home win streak.
Syracuse is riding a program-best 15-game win streak. Caira and SU's defense have allowed just 11 runs during that run, which dates back to April 26. The Orange outscored its opponents 80-11 and recorded 11 shutouts, including seven straight from April 26-May 4.
With the decision against LSU, Caira extended her program record season wins mark to 35 games (35-9). She allowed just five hits and walked one batter in 11 innings of work against the Tigers.
Texas A&M associate head coach Mary Jo Firnbach spent seven seasons as the head coach at Syracuse as the first head coach of the program before making the move to College Station, Texas. She compiled an overall record of 174-169-1 and earned BIG EAST Conference Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2005.
Under head coach Jo Evans, the Aggies are making its 22nd overall and 10th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. Evans recorded her 900th career victory against Sacred Heart yesterday.
Freshman Amber Garza hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first to give Texas A&M an early 4-0 lead. Senior Rhiannon Kliesing also hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to run rule Sacred Heart, 10-2. Kliesing now has a team-best 17 homeruns this season and leads the Aggies in RBI with 50. Redshirt junior Natalie Villarreal tops the squad in hitting percentage at .346 and runs scored with 45.
