SU To Compete In NCAA Regional

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Members of the Syracuse University track and field team will participate in the 2011 NCAA East Preliminary Round this weekend. Competition in Bloomington, Ind. will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 26 and wrap up on Saturday, May 28. Live video and live results will be provided by the host institution, the University of Indiana, free of charge.
On the sprints side, senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong will represent the Orange in the 100 meter dash, meanwhile freshman Donald Pollitt will compete in the 110 meter hurdles race. Owusu-Agyapong and Pollitt both placed third at the BIG EAST Championship this outdoor season. They are respectively ranked 36th and 38th in the east region.
On the field side, senior BIG EAST heptathlon champion Kelsey Rubeor earned the right to compete in an individual event. She is currently ranked 21st in the javelin. Other BIG EAST winner, junior Ieva Staponkute, will take action in the triple jump. She is currently ranked 12th.
Several distance runners will also represent the Orange at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Junior Lauren Penney, senior Katie Hursey and senior Catherine DeSarle will compete in the 5,000 meter run. They rank eighth, 11th and 38th, respectively. Penney is also ranked 32nd in the 1,500 meter run and DeSarle seventh in the 10,000 meter race. Sophomore Sarah Pagano and junior Natalie Busby will join her senior teammate in the 10,000 meter run, both placing in the top-48 in the region.
The 3,000 meter steeplechase will feature four SU athletes on the women's side. Hursey and Busby place seventh and ninth, respectively, meanwhile junior Heather Stephens and junior Cassie White rank 11th and 15th, respectively.
After winning the BIG EAST Championship in the 10,000 meter run, junior Tito Medrano, is ranked 11th. Junior Pat Dupont will be the lone Orange runner in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He placed third in the BIG EAST Championship this outdoor season and he is currently ranked 23rd in the east region.
The NCAA Championships will take place in Des Moines, Iowa from June 8-11. Only student-athletes in top-12 in each event at the NCAA Regionals are guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Championship.
