BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Four members of the Syracuse University track and field team ranked among the top athletes in the country this weekend at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. Junior Tito Medrano, and seniors Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Katie Hursey and Kelsey Rubeor have each advanced to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa from June 8-11.
After winning back-to-back BIG EAST Championships in the 10,000 meter run, Medrano continued his run of success in the post season. He placed fifth overall with a personal-besttime of 29:10.01 to earn a spot at nationals.
Hursey finished second in heat two of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:08.44. On the sprints side, Owusu-Agyapongrepresented the Orange well in the 100 meter dash, placing third in heat five of the prelims.Her personal-best time of 11.60 advancedher to the semifinals. In the semifinals,her time of 11.67 was enough to secure a spot at nationals.
Rubeor had previously secured a slot at nationals in the heptathlon. She competed in the javelin at the NCAA Preliminary's finishing 16th in flight three with a throw of 40.72 meters.
Three other runners joined Hursey in the steeplechase. Senior Cassie White (10:33.42) and junior Natalie Busby (10:38.59) took seventh and ninth, respectively, in heat one. Junior Heather Stephens placed sixth in heat three with a time of 10:19.97.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior Lauren Penney took 14th in heat two with a time of 16:52.03. Three members of the Orange competed in the 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Sarah Pagano led all SU runners across the finish line in 23rd with a time of 34:20.73. Senior Catherine DeSarle (34:45.04) and freshman Lauren Kersjes (35:36.35) followed in the 33rd and 43rdspots, respectively.
In the field for the women, the BIG EAST and ECAC triple jump champion, junior Ieva Staponkute placed eighth in flight three with a leap of 12.29 meters.
All-BIG EAST 110-meter hurdler, freshman Donald Pollitt, placed sixth in heat five of the prelims with a time of 14.38 to advance to the semifinals where he took eighth with a time of 14.55. Junior Matt Callanan finished seventh in heat three with a time of 14.71.
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Pat Dupont took seventh with a time of 9:01.88.
