Syracuse has found its way into the annual Dickie V Preseason Top 40 selected by espn.com columnist and broadcaster Dick Vitale. The Orange are fourth in the ranking, announced July 25.
Vitale notes in his report that Syracuse "should be favored in the competitive BIG EAST" and points to Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim and returning starters Kris Joseph and Scoop Jardine as key performers.
He tabbed North Carolina for the top spot, followed by Kentucky, Ohio State, Syracuse and Vanderbilt. The rest of the Dickie V poll features Duke, Memphis, defending champion Connecticut, Louisville and Florida.
The other BIG EAST squads who were named in the preseason Top 40 included: Pittsburgh (11), Marquette (18), Cincinnati (20), West Virginia (30), Villanova (32), Notre Dame (36) and St. John's (39).
