OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Not only is Syracuse ace Jenna Caira one of the top pitchers in the NCAA, she proved she was one of the best in the world as Caira finished the 2011 World Cup of Softball with a 3-0 record and led Team Canada to the bronze medal.
Caira threw a complete-game victory against Australia on Monday night in the bronze-medal game as Canada revenged its loss to the Australian's in preliminary play and claimed third place at the World Cup.
Australia applied early pressure in the top of the first as the Green and Gold loaded the bases with two outs. However, Caira would use one of her two strikeouts to eliminate the threat and leave three runners on base.
The senior, Toronto, Ontario native would find herself in the same bases-loaded predicament in the top of the third. She allowed the first run of the game, but limited the damage to just one run as Australia once again left the bases loaded.
From that point on, Caira would allow just two hits through the final four innings while receiving some support from the Canadian bats to the tune of four runs as Canada prevailed, 4-1.
For the tournament, Caira pitched a total of 16 innings while allowing just five earned runs on 15 hits.
