The Boeheim Fantasy Basketball Camp Concludes

The first annual Jim Boeheim Fantasy Basketball Camp is history.
I am 100 percent pleased that I chose to participate, but I realize that this camp is really for guys who play basketball, and are good at it, not guys like me who basically like to watch it. Don't get me wrong though. It was truly a fantasy for me and has provided me with lifetime memories and, I hope, long-lasting friendships.
We played our first game this morning at the Melo Center. My wife and daughter came over to watch, and unfortunately we lost a very close and exciting game. For the first time during this camp, I did not get to play, but we have many great players on the team. I should tell you that this includes Mike Waters, my teammate, who had protested early on that he was not very good. Don't believe it. Mike was a valuable asset to our team.
We went over to the Carrier Dome (with, I might add, a police escort -- a nice touch to go along with the fantasy motif.) Playing on the Carrier Dome court was a dream come true for me, after having watched so many games there. I actually got to play a good portion of the game, due in part to the unfortunate major injury during the morning game to one of our guys, Jason, who was one of our really good players. And… I actually scored a basket! A real, legitimate, ball-goes-in-the-hoop, basket. The loud cheers that I heard (both from my team and the opposing team) pretty much brought me to tears. You see, for me, this is what it was all about… Friendship, keeping up each other's spirits, and teamwork.
I will always remember Lawrence Moten regaling us with stories about how he became a starter and his mother telling him never to give that up. I will always remember his undying encouragement, and I will always remember him calling me "Neil (Heart of) Gold."
I will always remember Roosevelt Bouie coming up behind me and pounding my shoulders in support. I will always remember the talk we had about evaluating basketball talent.
I will always remember Adrian Autry teaching me about various offensive plays and making me keep my head up if I got discouraged.
I will always remember Donte´ Greene graciously asking me about my family.
I will absolutely always remember the unbelievable friendship and support I received from every member of this camp, and the true joy they felt for me when my shot went through the net.
I will always remember.
