SYRACUSE, N.Y. – John Wallace, Syracuse's single-season leader for points scored (845 in 1995-96), was in attendance at Coach Jim Boeheim's Fantasy Camp this past week.
Still surrounding himself with basketball at all levels, the third-leading scorer in program history keeps himself busy from the AAU level up through his work with the NBA.
What are you doing to stay busy these days?
“I run a youth mentoring program called 'Winning Because I Tried,' which is really huge and I am continuing to blow it up. I run an AAU program called Upstate Elite. I have six guys already in college and another three of four going to college this year. I am just doing little business things here and there. I still do a lot with the New York Knicks, just staying relevant in that market and keeping myself busy.”
What's your best memory at Syracuse?
“Going to the Final Four and hitting that game-winning shot against Georgia in the tournament. It was an amazing feeling. No one expected anything from us, so we surprised a lot of people, not ourselves, but a lot of other people. It was a great run and we all felt really good about it.”
What are your thoughts on the Carmelo Anthony Basketball Practice Facility?
“I love the Melo Center. I wish we had it when I was here, it's incredible. It's the best place to practice college basketball in the country.”
What would your message to be to a potential recruit?
“You go to the Carrier Dome for a game, you have 30,000 people there. You come to this practice facility, it's second-to-none. What else could you ask for? This is the best place to play college basketball in the country, bar none.”
Can you break down the 2011-12 Syracuse Orange basketball team for me?
“They have another great recruiting class and a lot of great players coming back. It's just a matter of putting that all together and having it mesh. Hopefully we can make a good run this year.”
Up next in the 12 part “Where Are They Now,” series, SUAthletics.com switches its focus to former SU players who are currently on the Syracuse coaching staff, starting with assistant coach Mike Hopkins.
