Syracuse's Carrier Dome, the only domed stadium in the Northeast, and the largest structure of its kind on a college campus in the United States, turned 31 years old on Tuesday.
The 49,262-seat stadium has hosted a variety of events since its opening on September 20, 1980. The facility serves as the home of the SU football, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's lacrosse. The Dome has also hosted numerous rounds of NCAA championships in basketball, lacrosse and track and field and hosts regional and state scholastic competitions in football, as well as NBA preseason games.
The Dome was constructed between April 1979 and September 1980. More than 80 companies contributed to transforming 30,000 cubic yards of concrete and 880 tons of steel into the fifth-largest domed stadium in the nation. The Carrier Dome covers 7.7 acres and has 527,320 square feet of floor space. It is 570 feet long and 497 feet wide, and the top of the Dome is 165 feet above the playing surface.
In August of 2005, state-of-the-art Field Turf was installed to replace the Astro Turf surface, covering the entire arena floor, which is 82,000 square feet (215 feet wide by 405 feet long).
Jim Boeheim Court is a 60-foot by 100-foot hardwood basketball floor - used for SU home basketball games and is assembled in the west end-zone and is composed of 225 interlocking sections.
Syracuse will surpass the eight million mark in home football attendance at the Carrier Dome at some point during the 2011 season. The Orange has drawn 7,931,824 fans since the stadium opened 31 years ago. It has averaged 41,476 fans per game and is 68,176 short of the eight million milestone. On February 27, 2010, the men's basketball team set a NCAA on-campus record with 34,616 fans in attendance to see the Orange defeat Villanova, 95-77.
The Dome will hold its next event on Saturday, September 24 when the Orange football team squares off with Toledo (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Individual and season tickets are available for the game online, at the Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX). Season tickets start at $99, while the Time Warner Triple Play Pack, which offers one ticket to any three home games, starts at $72.
