SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three runs in the bottom of the first inning proved to be plenty as the Syracuse University softball team defeated Binghamton 5-0 on Friday night at the SU Softball Stadium.

In a game that was dedicated to breast cancer awareness, SU's first five batters reached safely, highlighted by RBI singles from Lacey Kohl and Jasmine Watson. SU tallied three runs on three hits in the first frame.

Veronica Grant and Stephanie Watts would each add an RBI in the fourth inning to give SU a 5-0 advantage which would ultimately be the final score.

Pitcher Jenna Caira went four innings, allowing two hits and no runs. Stacy Kuwik pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit.

“It was a great night, but most importantly it was a great turn out from our community to support a really good cause,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “I credit Kelly Saco and Emily Thompson for putting together this whole thing. For them to do that and play in the game is just great to see.

“Our pitchers threw well tonight. We scored early and had control of the entire game which was a positive sign.”

The team held silent auctions throughout the game with all the proceeds being donated to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Orange concludes its fall schedule on Sunday as Syracuse hosts Le Moyne at the SU Softball Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
