QUEENS, N.Y. – The Orange volleyball team (9-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) looks to notch its first league wins of the season with a weekend road swing at St. John's on Saturday and at Connecticut on Sunday.
Syracuse will rely on its 1-2 punch of middle blockers Sam Hinz and Lindsay McCabe to snap its current two match losing streak. Hinz continues to lead the BIG EAST in blocks with 89, while McCabe has tallied the most solo blocks in conference with 15. The duo ranks first and second in the league in blocks per set and they are also third and fourth on the team in kills, respectively.
Freshman Andrea Fisher continues to play at a high level as the Burlington, Ontario native has reached double-digit kills in nine of SU's 15 games. She has registered the second most kills on the team with 138.
If setter Laura Homann can dish out 72 assists or more this weekend, she would become the sixth player in SU history to have 3,000 helpers in a career.
The Red Storm enters the contest with an overall record of 9-10 and a conference mark of 0-2. SJU's two conference losses came in three set sweeps on the road to Louisville and Cincinnati, who were picked to finish 1-2 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse leads the all-times with SJU 9-8 and has a current two-match winning streak against the Red Storm.
Connecticut enters the weekend with a 0-2 conference mark as the Huskies also suffered sweeps to Louisville and Cincinnati. UConn is 8-7 overall and has already surpassed its win total from 2010. Connecticut is Syracuse's second most common opponent. This will be the 42nd meeting in the rivalry with SU holding a 27-14 advantage.
First serve between the Orange and the Red Storm is set for 2 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena. The Syracuse versus Connecticut match is also a 2 p.m. start time inside Gampel Pavilion. Fans can watch a live web stream and follow live stats for both matches by clicking on the links above.
