SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With its first game less than six weeks away, the Syracuse women's lacrosse squad had its first practices to prepare for the 2012 season on Friday, Jan. 13. The squad held two sessions in the Manley Field House arena.
“The girls are ready,” said fifth-year head coach Gary Gait. “They didn't take time off. They worked hard and came back in shape. They are focused and ready to play.”
The Orange returns nine starters and four of its top five scorers from last year's squad that won a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title. Junior Michelle Tumolo led the team in scoring last season with 63 points. Her 33 assists in 2011 were the most for a sophomore in school history. Sophomore Alyssa Murray was third on the team in scoring with 45 points (23g, 20a), while sophomore Katie Webster and senior Sarah Holden ranked second on the team in goals with 32 apiece.
Syracuse must replace All-American goalkeeper Liz Hogan, who started every game in her career. Sophomore Alyssa Costantino and freshman Kelsey Richardson will battle for the starting job during the preseason. Costantino played in five games last season, recording an 11.53 goals-against average.
“They are both fighting for the starting position,“ Gait said. “They are fairly equal and fairly matched. Both have the opportunity to step up and earn that spot or they may share time.”
The starting goalkeeper will have plenty of help as the Orange returns several experienced defenders. Senior Janelle Stegeland is a two-year starter for SU, while senior Jill Cammett played in all 18 games last season. Juniors Becca Block and Linley Block saw their role increase last season. Both recorded career highs in ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers. In addition, sophomore Natalie Glanell returns after playing in all 18 games in her rookie season. She tied for third on the team in caused turnovers.
Syracuse opens the season on Feb. 21 when it hosts No. 10 Boston College at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
