SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Kristin Richards' goal with 1:26 left in overtime was the difference as Niagara (8-11-6, 1-2-1) skated past SU (8-15-3, 0-3-3) on Saturday at Tennity Ice Pavilion, 2-1. Kaillie Goodnough scored the lone goal for the Orange, while Kallie Billadeau made 28 saves in goal.
SU held a slight 33-30 shot advantage for the game, and was 0-of-5 on the power play in a physical battle. Niagara was 1-of-6 on the man advantage, potting their power play tally in overtime.
Although Syracuse outshot the Purple Eagles 1-0 and had three power play chances during the first period, it was Niagara that took a 1-0 lead just 67 seconds into the game on a goal from Jessica Hitchcock.
With NU pressuring in the offensive zone, Billadeau saved back-to-back shots on Hitchcock and Kalli Funk. But with Billadeau sprawled on the ice after saving the second shot, Hitchcock scooped up the loose rebound and tucked it under Billadeau's pad for the score.
The physical play escalated in the second period as six penalties were assessed within a span of 53 seconds, three to each team. Syracuse leveled the score at one with 11:06 left in the frame as Goodnough scored her fourth of the season on slap shot past NU goaltender Sarah Moses (32 saves) from just inside the point after a faceoff win by Margot Scharfe.
Billadeau, who made a string of 27 straight saves from the first period through overtime, came up with 11 big stops during the third period to keep the game tied at one. Six of Billadeau's saves came with the Orange shorthanded during three penalty kills during the final 20 minutes.
In the overtime period, Syracuse was whistled for back-to-back penalties late in the extra session, putting SU down to a five-on-three penalty kill. Off the ensuing faceoff, an Erin Burns shot from the point was saved by Billadeau, but Richards quickly gathered the rebound and hammered it past Billadeau for the game-winner.
Syracuse will head back on the road to Quinnipiac for two games next weekend, beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m.
