CINCINNATI, Ohio – No. 3/4 Syracuse (20-1, 7-1) looks to return to its winning ways when it plays at Cincinnati (15-5, 5-2) on Monday, Jan. 23. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
The game will be available on ESPN as part of its “Big Monday” broadcast and on ESPN3. Fans can also follow the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5 FM). CLIMBING THE CHARTS
With seven assists against Notre Dame, senior Scoop Jardine has climbed to sixth place on Syracuse's career assists leader list. Jardine has dished out 541 assists in his career, moving him past Eddie Moss (1977-81) on the career leader ledger. Jardine, who leads the team in assists this season with 103, is averaging 8.7 assists in his last three contests.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse had its 20-game winning streak snapped in a 67-58 loss at Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Fighting Irish held the Orange to season-lows in points, field goals made (18) and field goal percentage (34.0).
SU fell behind early as Notre Dame opened the game by hitting 4-of-6 from three-point range. The Fighting Irish's fifth three-pointer of the half put Notre Dame up 18 points (35-17), giving Syracuse its largest deficit of the season. Sophomore Dion Waiters hit back-to-back three-pointers to end the half and cut Notre Dame's lead to 35-23 at intermission.
Sophomore #C.J. Fair#'s two free throws at the 17:46 mark of the second half brought Syracuse within eight at 38-30, but Notre Dame responded with a 10-1 scoring run, extending its lead back to 17 with 14 minutes to play. The Orange chipped away at the lead and James Southerland's third three-pointer of the contest cut the Irish's advantage to 62-56 with 56 seconds left, but Notre Dame went 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory.
Southerland led the Orange with 15 points, while senior Kris Joseph had 12. Waiters finished with 11 points and recorded four steals.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Cincinnati enters Monday's game with a 15-5 overall mark and a 5-2 record in BIG EAST play. The Bearcats had their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 77-74 overtime loss at West Virginia. Overall, Cincinnati has won 10 of its last 12 games.
Four Bearcats are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Sean Kilpatrick (16.0 ppg). Kilpatrick ranks 13th in the BIG EAST in scoring, while Dion Dixon is 22nd in the league (13.9 ppg). Cincinnati's other double-digit scorers are Yancy Gates (12.2 ppg) and Cashmere Wright (10.8 ppg). Gates leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 9.4 per game, and Wright has dished out a team-best 96 assists.
Head coach Mick Cronin is in his sixth season at the helm of the Cincinnati program. He has guided the Bearcats to a record of 102-82 and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011.
THE SERIES
Syracuse leads the all-time series against Cincinnati, 6-2. The Orange has won the last three meetings. Last season SU defeated the Bearcats, 67-52, in the Carrier Dome. Scoop Jardine scored 11 points and dished out seven assists, and Brandon Triche added 11 points, three assists and a pair of rebounds.
