ITHACA, N.Y. -- #Jarret Eaton's SU record breaking performance in the 60-meter hurdles and Flings Owusu-Agyapong#'s Barton Hall facility record in the 60-meter dash highlighted Syracuse's performance on Saturday at the Cornell Upstate Challenge in Ithaca. In addition, nine Syracuse student-athletes secured spots in the ECAC and IC4A Championships as both the men's and women's squads finished third against teams from Cornell, Buffalo, Cortland, Binghamton and Ithaca.
Eaton's BIG EAST, IC4A and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7.61 is the fastest in the nation this season, and broke the previous school record of 7.68, which Eaton set last season at the New Balance Invitational. Teammate Amadou Gueye also competed in the event, finishing second at 8.04 to earn a spot in the conference and IC4A championships.
"We had a very solid meet," said head coach Chris Fox. "But the real story was Jarret Eaton running the fastest time in the country."
Owusu-Agyapong, Ashley Keyes and Sabrina Cammock all advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash, where Owusu-Agyapong broke the facility record with a 7.40 second race and a spot in the ECAC Championships, finishing just 0.03 seconds behind the Syracuse record that she set last season.
Also on the women's side, sophomore SaDe Lewis secured a spot in the ECAC Championships in the preliminary's of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with the top preliminary time of 8.73 before ultimately finishing fifth in the final heat at 8.88.
Freshman Molly Malone finished second in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:53.89 in her first collegiate competition, earning BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying times. Teammate Erin Cawley will join Malone at the conference and ECAC Championships after her first place finish in the 3000-meter run at 9:58.66, while Alexandra Clinton, Carly Hamond, Lauryn MacFawn and Kimberly Spano also finished in the top-ten.
In the mile, SU placed four runners in the top-ten as Beth Wright (2nd; 5:09.14), Maura Linde (3rd; 5:09.67), Brenna Symoniak (8th; 5:19.14) and Angelina Peck (9th; 5:21.41) all competed for Syracuse. The Orange also dominated the men's mile run, taking the top three spots with Reed Kamyszek, Robert Molke and Andrew Bennison all finishing within less than one second of each other.
Jaquan Holland (6.84) and Jihaad Howard (6.96) finished second and fifth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash en route to a spot in the BIG EAST Championships in mid-February.
Ieva Staponkute set the pace for Syracuse in the field events on Saturday, finishing first in the triple jump at 12.16-meters on just her second leap of the day to clinch position in the BIG EAST and IC4A championships.
Senior Frank Taylor also earned a spot in the conference championships in the men's long jump at 6.98-meters, good for a fifth place finish.
Syracuse will be back in action next weekend as the Orange competes in the Penn State National Invitational and Boston University Terrier Invitational.
