SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's lacrosse program welcomed back more than 25 former players for Alumnae Day on Saturday, Jan. 21. Nearly every graduating class since the program began in 1998 was represented.
The day began with a mentoring session between the alumnae and members of the current squad. Jill DePetris '07 told the team members about the “Friends of Syracuse Women's Lacrosse” group that helps keep alums and current student-athletes in touch with each other.
“We started the group to create a bridge between the current team with the alumnae,” DePetris said. “There really wasn't anything in place before for the alumnae to connect. There are such amazing people who have gone through the program so it's a disservice to all of us if we don't connect in a way that is professional. This was a way to connect with the current team and get everyone united.”
The alums discussed their career choices and the paths they took to get to their current positions. In addition, many offered advice on how to find internships and how to connect with Syracuse alums in cities where they want to live.
“We want to act as resources for them in the future because the alums are in such great professions in different cities,” said Katie Rowan '09. “We want them to know that we are a great resource and we're here to help and support them.”
“We want to give them any professional resources that we can,” DePetris added. “That is what the mentoring group is. The world can be a scary place once you graduate. We wanted them to be able to ask questions and know somebody in the area they want to live or the profession they want to pursue.”
Following the mentoring session, the alums got back on the field as they took on the current team in a game in the Manley Field House arena. The day ended with a social event.
“We wanted the get all of the alums back for a weekend so that everyone could get to know each other better and let the current team know that we support them 100 percent,” Rowan said. “We are so excited about the season.”
