Syracuse has a busy weekend on tap as the Orange will compete at the Penn State, Boston University and Colgate Invitational. SU will travel to State College, Pa. this weekend to attend the Penn State National Invitational, with more than 1,000 athletes from more than 30 top programs around the country will compete at the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Friday and Saturday. Events kick off Friday at 5:45 p.m. with a 10 a.m. start Saturday morning.
Competition will be fierce in all directions as long distance powerhouses such as Villanova, Georgetown, Virginia and Ohio State are amongst teams registered. Following the precedent set during the last five years in the mile run competition, crowds should expect yet another performance featuring sub-4:00 mile.
Syracuse is coming off a successful weekend at the Cornell Upstate Challenge, where nine members of the team clinched spots in the IC4A and ECAC Championships later this season, led by Jarret Eaton's school record time of 7.61 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, securing a trip to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in March.
Other members of the Orange squad will venture to Boston Mass., to attend the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Saturday. SU will be represented by 19 long distance runners which will compete at the Track and Tennis Center starting at 10:25 a.m.
Sophomore Terrier Rich Peters has made his mark, completing the one mile run in 4:00.13, the fastest indoor time in the nation this season at the Multi-Team Meet on January 19.
Head coach Chris Fox will also keep some SU student-athletes local, competing at the Colgate Katie Almeter Memorial Class of '32 Invitational in Hamilton, NY.
Senior Graham Tooker of the Raiders will be looking to follow up his stellar performance at the Boston University and Harvard Challenge last Saturday at this home meet. Tooker finished second in the 200m dash and third in the 400m dash, both which were IC4A qualifying runs.
In The Polls:
The Syracuse men's team is 15th in the first United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Northeast Regional rankings, which were released on Tuesday. The SU men also jumped 92 spots in the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings earlier this week, the biggest mover of any team in the country.
