"We have the best fans in college basketball."
So said Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, while addressing a loud Dome crowd at Orange Madness on Friday night. Both the men's and women's teams were on hand for the official public kickoff of the 2012-13 basketball season.
Boeheim made the most dramatic entrance of the night. He rode into the Dome in a military hum-vee, escorted by soldiers from Syracuse and Ft. Drum. When he emerged from the vehicle, he was wearing his Team USA warmup suit from the 2012 London Olympics. After a loud ovation, he revealed a gold medal from under the outfit.
Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney then presented Boeheim with special recognition, having named October 12, 2012 "Jim Boeheim Day."
The men played two eight-minute halves in a scrimmage that featured a number of spectacular plays, from a James Southerland tip dunk, to a 3-ball from Trevor Cooney to a couple of two-handed slams by freshman DaJuan Coleman.
This year's dunk contest included freshman Brittany Sykes from the women's team. other contestants included Trevor Cooney, Michael Gbinije, James Southerland and Brandon Triche. Southerland defended his dunk crown from last year's event.
The women's team kicked off the evening by being introduced to the Dome crowd one-by-one, finishing with head coach Quentin Hillsman's entrance. The team held its blue vs. white scrimmage, with junior guard Rachel Coffey nailing three 3-pointers to lead the way in the eight-minute exhibition.
ESPNU was on hand to televise some of the festivities. Musical entertainment came from nationally-known rapper Wale.
