With 2:26 left in the overtime period, Julie Knerr netted her first goal of the season to give the Syracuse ice hockey team a 2-1 win against conference opponent, RIT (6-5-2, 1-3-2 CHA). Goaltender Kallie Billadeau notched 18 saves in SU's first overtime victory of the season. In their previous meeting, the Orange (6-5-1, 3-0-1) and Tigers battled to a 2-2 tie after an overtime period.
"I thought RIT gave us all we can handle," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "They are very difficult to play against. They are really solid fundamentally. I think they frustrated us tonight. At the same time, we kept working. We kept going after them. We drew those penalties because we were working hard late in the game so that gave us an opportunity to have some space and time on the power play."
The first two periods of the game remained scoreless. SU outshot the Tigers 12-5 in the first frame but failed to capitalize on three power play opportunities.
The second period saw RIT take a 7-5 advantage in shots. Both teams went 0-for-1 on power plays in the second 20 minutes of play.
The third period is when both the Orange and Tigers found the back of the net. RIT's Kirstina Moss found Ariane Yokoyama who buried her shot from the top of the right circle. The Tigers held a 1-0 advantage at 5:49 in the third period.
RIT would hold the lead until 41 seconds left in the game. Two penalties against the Tigers with less than two minutes left gave the Orange a 5-on-3 advantage. SU pulled Billadeau from net to gain an extra attacker with 1:06 left on the clock. During the power play Akane Hosoymoda gathered the puck and passed it to sophomore forward Shiann Darkangelo. Darkangelo fired a shot top shelf to tie it up, 1-1, and sent the game into overtime.
Almost halfway through the extra frame, Allie LaCombe got the puck to Kaillie Goodnough. Goodnough put the puck on net where Knerr was waiting. After Knerr faked left, she beat goaltender Ali Binnington on her right side for the game-winning goal.
Binnginton finished the game with 29 saves. SU outshot the Tigers, 31-19.
Jacquie Greco hit the century mark, playing in her 100th game this evening. She joins fellow senior captain Holly Carrie-Mattimoe as the only active player on SU's roster that has played in over 100 games in their career.
Prior to tonight's contest, the Orange was 0-1-1 in overtime games. The Orange earned its first overtime win as well as its first home conference game victory of the 2012-13 season.
SU returns to the ice this weekend, hosting RPI on Friday, Nov. 23 (7 p.m.) and Saturday, Nov. 24 (4 p.m.) at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
