SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim tries to become just the third Division I head coach to record 900 career victories when No. 4/4 Syracuse hosts Detroit on Monday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The contest is part of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic. The Orange (9-0) is one of nine schools in Division I that remain undefeated this season. The Titans enter Monday's contest with a 6-4 record.
Tickets for Monday's game are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). The game will be broadcast ESPN2. Fans not in attendance can listen to the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5 FM). Live video and audio will be available on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com. 899 AND COUNTING
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim recorded his 899th victory when the Orange defeated Canisius on Dec. 15. The Hall of Famer is now one win away from becoming just the third Division I coach to record 900 career victories. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski is the all-time leader with 935 wins followed by Bob Knight's 902 victories.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse used a strong second-half performance in an 85-61 victory against Canisius in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Dec. 15. The victory was the ninth straight for the Orange to open the season and extended its non-conference home winning streak to 51 and its home court winning streak to 29.
A tight first half featured three lead changes as neither team led by more than seven points. With Syracuse leading by two, the Orange scored five consecutive points to extend its advantage to 30-23 with 5:41 play in the opening stanza. Canisius responded with a 9-0 scoring run to take a 32-30 lead with 2:23 on the clock. The Orange tallied the final five points of the half, including a three-pointer from senior Brandon Triche at the buzzer, and led 35-32 at intermission.
Syracuse outscored the Griffs 15-3 in the first 5:05 of the second half. Triche started the run with a pair of free throws and capped it with a three-pointer. The Orange continued to pull away from Canisius, leading by as many as 23.
Senior James Southerland led the Orange with 21 points, while Triche finished with 19. Sophomore Michael Carter-Williams had 12 points and 14 assists for his fifth consecutive double-double, and sophomore Rakeem Christmas added 10 points.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit enters Monday's game with a four-game winning streak. The Titans are 6-4 overall, with all of their victories coming at home.
Junior Ray McCallum, who is the son of the head coach, is Detroit's leading scorer, averaging 19.4 points per game. He is one of four players who average double figures in scoring. Jason Calliste scores 13.2 points per game, while Nick Minnerath adds 13.2. In addition, Doug Anderson is averaging 10.5 points per contest. Minnerath is Detroit's leading rebounder (6.0 rpg.), and McCallum leads the squad with 49 assists.
Ray McCallum is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans' program. Last season he guided Detroit to 22 wins, the sixth-highest total in school history, and the NCAA Tournament. Previously, McCallum served as the head coach at Ball State and Houston.
THE SERIES…
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Detroit, 4-1. The Titans won the first meeting in 1961 and the Orange has won the last four contests, which includes a 66-55 win in the Carrier Dome on Nov. 16, 2010.
