SOUTHERLAND JOINS RARE COMPANY
Senior James Southerland's performance against Arkansas was one for the record books. He tied the single-game school record with nine three-point field goals. Southerland is the third player in school history to hit nine three-pointers in a game, joining assistant coach Gerry McNamara (BUY, 3/18/04) and Andy Rautins (Coppin State, 12/22/08). Southerland finished with 35 points against the Razorbacks. He is the first player to score 30 or more points in a game since Wesley Johnson had 31 against Gonzaga in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Southerland now leads the BIG EAST in three-pointers made (3.6) and ranks sixth in the league in scoring (19.2).
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse extended its winning streak to five with a 91-82 win at Arkansas in the SEC/BIG EAST Challenge on Friday, Nov. 30. Senior James Southerland led the Orange offense with a career-high 35 points.
Syracuse trailed the Razorbacks, 10-7, before going on a 10-0 scoring run, which gave SU the lead for good. Southerland hit his fifth three-pointer of the game to give the Orange a 15-point lead, its largest of the first half, at 30-15 just 10 minutes into the game. But Arkansas fought back, cutting Syracuse's lead to 43-38 at halftime.
The Razorbacks quickly cut the lead to two at the beginning of the second half, but the Orange responded with a 14-1 scoring run to regain a 15-poin5 advantage with 17:12 to play. Arkansas wouldn't go away and was able to get within five points, but could get no closer as Syracuse put an end to the Razorbacks' 25-game non-conference home winning streak.
Southerland was 9-for-13 from the three-point range and tied the single-game school record for three-point field goals. Sophomore Michael Carter-Williams recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also added nine assists. Senior Brandon Triche had 17 points, while C.J. Fair added 14 points.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Eastern Michigan enters Monday's game on a four-game winning streak and a 5-1 record. Three Eagles average double figures in scoring, including Daylen Harrison, who leads the way with 14.2 points per game. Derek Thompson averages 12.8, while Glenn Bryant adds 10.8 points per contest. Former Orange Da'Shonte Riley leads Eastern Michigan on the boards with 7.2 rebounds per game.
Rob Murphy is in his second season at Eastern Michigan. Murphy spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse prior to becoming the Eagles' head coach. In his first season at Eastern Michigan, Murphy guided the Eagles to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) West title and was named the MAC Coach of the Year.
