SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite a close encounter in the first few minutes of play, the #4/4 Orange (6-0) defeated Eastern Michigan (5-2) in a 84-48 decision on Monday evening, the exact score in last year's matchup between the two teams.
Syracuse also extends its home winning streak to 26 consecutive games in the Carrier Dome and has now recorded 47 straight regular-season nonconference victories.
"We were a little tentative," said senior Brandon Triche. "Even in past years, we've always struggled playing against our own zone. Their length was deceiving and they were able to get in the passing lane so it took us a little while to adjust to it," said Triche.
Freshman DaJuan Coleman led the Orange offense with a career-high 14 points, while sophomore Michael-Carter-Williams racked up his second consecutive double-double of the season, tallying 11 points and 11 assists. Freshman Jerami Grant hit a personal-best with 11 points, adding two blocks, while redshirt freshman Trevor Cooney also posted a season-high 11 points.
Syracuse held Eastern Michigan to .295 percent (18-of-61) from the field and .211 percent (4-of-19) three-point shooting.
The Orange started slowly in the first five minutes, as the Eagles used a 10-1 run to take an early seven point advantage. SU responded with a 9-2 run, featuring a pair of dunks from junior C.J. Fair and two back-to-back buckets from Triche to tie the score at 12-12.
Senior James Southerland followed with two more jumpers to give SU a four-point lead at 16-12 with 7:48 remaining in the half. From there, the Orange took control, holding Eastern Michigan to just five points for the rest of the opening frame.
SU rounded out the half on a 13-2 streak, ahead by 18 points, led by Coleman and Grant who had four points each during the spurt. The Orange outscored the Eagles 32-9 in the final 15 minuntes before heading into the locker room with a 35-17 lead.
Syracuse returned from the break ready to dominate in the second half, scoring eight unanswered points in 40 seconds to stretch the SU lead to 31 points at 68-37. The Orange ended the game on a 12-2 run led by Cooney, who posted six unanswered points during the final three minutes of play.
