POTSDAM, NY - The Syracuse women's ice hockey team fell in a road contest at No. 2 Clarkson, 3-2, this evening. Both senior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and junior Sadie St. Germain had the two tallies for the Orange (9-7-1, 4-1-1 CHA) while junior Kallie Billadeau stopped a season- best 42 shots against the Golden Knights. SU's first two goals were scored on special teams, with Carrie-Mattimoe's tally coming on the power play and St. Germain's goal was shorthanded.
"We competed pretty hard tonight for sixty minutes and had some great chances late to tie it up," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We're looking forward to tomorrow's matchup at home."
The Orange held the lead for most of the contest after Carrie-Mattimoe put the Orange up, 1-0 at 10:47 in the first period. Margot Scharfe and Akane Hosoyamda had the two helpers on Carrie-Mattimoe's goal. The Golden Knights would counter back with a tally by Danielle Matteuchi.
SU's Kaillie Goodnough was called for hooking at 5:19 in the second period. The Orange penalty killing unit not only held of the Clarkson power play attack, but put the Orange in the lead again. St. Germain scored her first shorthanded goal of her career at 6:56.
The Golden Knights rebounded with two third period goals to secure its 14th victory of the season. Vanessa Plante scored 3:42 into the third frame to tie up the score, 2-2. A power play goal by Carley Mercer put the score at 3-2, in favor of Clarkson.
Clarkson's Erica Howe recorded 25 saves against Syracuse. The Orange went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Clarkson was 1-for-4.
