Syracuse Swept by No. 2 Clarkson

The Syracuse ice hockey team was defeated at home by No. 2 Clarkson, 5-4. The Orange fought hard at Tennity Ice Pavilion to try and earn a series split, but fell short on the scoreboard. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe, Allie LaCombe, Shiann Darkangelo and Margot Scharfe all had goals for the Orange this afternoon. Both Jenesica Drinkwater and Julie Bengis saw time in net, with Drinkwater posting 20 saves and Bengis notching 10.
Clarkson was first to get on the board in the high-scoring game, after Erin Ambrose found Jamie Lee Rattray up the center of the ice. Rattray went one-on-one with Drinkwater and found the back of the net, putting Clarkson up early in the first period at 3:03.
On Syracuse's first power play of the afternoon, Nicole Ferrara found Akane Hosoyomada on the blue line. Hosoymoda passed the puck down the ice to Carrie-Mattimoe who was on the edge of the left circle. Carrie-Mattimoe shot the puck on a slant past Howe, tying the game up 1-1 at 6:51 in the first period.
SU would continue its offensive attack after Sadie St. Germain took a shot from the left side that was tipped by Jacquie Greco. The puck came off of Howe's pads, right in front of LaCombe, who buried it, giving SU a 2-1 advantage at 13:31.
At 3:37 into the second period, Cara Johnson was called for interference. A quick power play goal Carly Mercer tied up the game at 2-2. Danielle Skirrow would give the Golden Knights a 3-2 lead at 11:39, scoring a goal off of assists from Rattray and Hailey Wood.
In the third period, Christine Lambert scored at 3:49 followed by another goal by Mercer scored her only a minute later to give the Golden Knights a 5-2 advantage with 15 minutes left in the third frame.
SU would never regain the lead, but the Orange fought hard to come close. Melissa Piacentini dug the puck out from behind the net and passed it to Darkangelo who was waiting on the right post to deflect the puck in at 7:05.
After a roughing penalty by Shannon Macaulay at 18:29, the Orange would pull Bengis to create a six on four situation. SU capitalized on the situation after Margo Scharfe scored at 18:44 off of assists from Carrie-Mattimoe and Ferrara, to put SU within one, 5-4.
SU was 2-for-5 on the power play while holding Clarkson to 1-for-3. Howe recorded 33 saves between the pipes for the Golden Knights.
The Orange returns to the ice on January 8, 2013 when it hosts Colgate at 7 p.m.
