Whelan Finishes First In Mile At Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Joseph Whelan's first place finish in the mile run with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 4:17.34 led the charge for the Syracuse track and field team this weekend at the Kane Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. The Orange had 12 top-ten finishes on the day, and will travel to New York City for next weekend's BIG EAST Championships at the Armory.
Also finding success for SU during the weekend was junior Jonathan Aziz, who finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run (15:17.11).
Senior Matthew Callanan, after finishing eighth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles at 8.36, improved with an 8.30 time in the finals, good for a fifth place finish. In the 60-meter dash, Colin Reno finished seventh overall with a time of 7.12.
Justin Murray and Sean Carney ran a neck-and-neck race in the 800-meters, finishing ninth (1:58.92) and 10th (1:59.22), respectively.
On the women's side, Kelly McCarthy led a string of three Orange with top-ten finishes in the 800-meter run with a third place finish (2:22.53). Also competing in the 800 was Julissa Wilson (seventh; 2:25.55) and Nancie Sophias (10th; 2:26.49).
Kimberly Spano earned a fifth place spot in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:16.94 while Katie Weisenberger placed 10th (10:38.95).
