Syracuse Shines At Weekend Meets

In the final meet of the regular season, the Syracuse track and field teams split the squad for competition at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier and the Columbia Last Chance meet at the Armory in New York City.
In Blacksburg, Va., senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.40, missing an automatic qualifying berth into next week's NCAA Championships by 0.17 seconds. Owusu-Agyapong reached the finals of the event after finishing first in her heat (7.42 seconds).
Teammate Amadou Gueye also competed at Virginia Tech in the 60-meter hurdles, reaching the semifinals following a fourth place finish in the preliminary heat (8.42 seconds). Gueye narrowly missed qualification for the finals are a time of 8.25 in the semifinals.
Jarret Eaton, in his final competition until next week's NCAA Indoor Championships, ran away with the 60-meter hurdles event at Columbia, finishing with a time of 7.63 seconds, 0.39 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Darryl White and Jihaad Howard, who have run neck and neck throughout the season, continued the trend in New York City, finished third (6.87) and fourth (6.88) overall in the 60-meter dash.
Martin Hehir, Ryan Urie and Jace Lowry all found success in the mile run with times of 4:06.22, 4:07.02 and 4:07.12.
Andrew Palmer ran the fastest Syracuse time in the 3,000-meter run, finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 8:21.79. Also competing in the event for SU was Joseph Whelan (8:30.10), Patrick Geoghegan (8:35.32) and Jon Squeri (8:39.01).
On the women's side, Molly Malone finished fourth in her heat in the 800-meter run (2:08.05) while Katie Hursey placed fourth in the mile run (4:46.58).
Lauren Penney led seven SU distance runners in the 3,000-meter run, finishing fourth in her heat with a time of 9:12.14.
Syracuse will be back in action next weekend for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Nampa, Idaho. Eaton is the lone Orange who earned an automatic bid to the championships, and at-large selections will be made on Monday, March 5.
