Lauren Penney, a senior distance runner on the Syracuse track and field team, grew tired of beating other runners. So this year, she has taken to beating her own record-setting times, as well. Earlier this season at the Penn State National Invitational, Penney outdid herself when she blazed through the mile run in 4:39 and eclipsed the school record she set last year in the event.
Last weekend, Penney shredded another Syracuse record, which she likewise had already claimed last year. At the Husky Classic in Washington, Penney ran the 3,000 meter in 9:12.76, beating her previous time by more than three seconds.
Her speed and determination have earned Penney more than just her share of the Syracuse record book. After finishing 37th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, she became the first female in Syracuse cross country history to earn All-American status.
During the 2011 cross country season, Penney led the Orange in every race she competed in and earned All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Region honors, as well.
In addition to being one of the fastest women to set foot on Syracuse's campus, Penney also excels when in the classroom. Last week, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named her as a member of its All-Academic squad. As a history and social studies education major, Penney has also earned her selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic team in each of the past three seasons.
Whether she is running on a trail or a track or sitting in the classroom, Penney continues to set a high standard of performance for Syracuse student-athletes.
