CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Syracuse University softball team (3-2) is in action this weekend at the Cathedral Classic where SU will take on Pacific, Northwestern, UC Davis, No. 16 Arizona and No. 5 UCLA.
The Orange won its first three games of the season at the Kajikawa Classic two weekends ago in Tempe, Ariz., and lost its final two. Its three wins came against Texas State, Cal State Northridge and McNeese State, while its two losses were at the hands of Arizona and California.
THE WEEKEND AHEAD:
Syracuse will play two more ranked teams this weekend, making it four of SU's first 10 games against the Top 25. SU will have a chance for redemption against No. 16 Arizona from its loss two weeks ago, while the Orange looks for a marquee win against No. 5 UCLA who enters the weekend with a 10-0 record.
KAJIKAWA CLASSIC IN REVIEW:
Jasmine Watson was honored with the first BIG EAST Player of the Week award for her outing in Tempe. The sophomore designated player batted .438 on the weekend with seven hits, three home runs and six RBI's, while slugging 1.000. Two of her three home runs came in a 6-3 loss to the now number one team in the nation, California.
With her third strikeout against McNeese State, Jenna Caira became the all-time leader in strikeouts at Syracuse. She was 11 shy of the record entering the weekend, and recorded 21 in three games. She now sits alone at the top with 793 K's.
Morgan Nandin tied a single-game Syracuse record with seven runs batted in against McNeese State. Nandin tied Hallie Gibbs' output of seven RBI's set last year against Rutgers. The junior short stop had an RBI single, a two-run double, a three-run home run and a sac fly in SU 11-2 victory against the Cowgirls.
Friday evening's contests against Pacific and Northwestern are scheduled for 8:30 and 11:00 p.m. EST. Saturday the Orange is in action at 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. EST, and finishes the weekend on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. EST against the Bruins.
