NAMPA, IDAHO – Senior hurdler Jarret Eaton (Abington, Pa.) became the first Syracuse track & field individual NCAA champion on Saturday night in Nampa, Idaho by capturing the 2012 NCAA 60-meter hurdle championship at Jackson's Indoor Track. Eaton, with a time of 7.54 seconds, won the event by 0.01 seconds to complete an undefeated season.
Eaton, running out of the fifth lane, battled Miami's Devon Hill and LSU's Barret Nugent throughout the contest, who each finished with a time of 7.55 seconds, before ultimately edging both athletes and leaning across the finish.
"I'm just happy to be here and represent Syracuse at the National Championship," said Eaton. "I've put in a lot of hard work with my teammates and it's been a tremendous year so far. I'm glad to make my family, friends, coaches and all of Cuse nation proud. But the journey"s not over yet."
Eaton won every race he competed in during the 2012 season, and broke his own school record in the event on two occasions.
“This is the best day ever for Syracuse track and field,” said head coach Chris Fox. “It was a great run by a great young man.”
Eaton, who was named the United States Track & Field and Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Northeast Region Male Track Athlete of the Year on Mar. 5, ran the fastest 60-meter hurdle time in the nation this season at 7.49 seconds.
The 2012 BIG EAST Champion in the same event, Eaton has been named the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week twice this season, and is on the Bowerman Award Watch List, an award given annually to the nation's top male and female track and field athletes.
