NEW ORLEANS – Senior Jarret Eaton (Abington, Pa.), fresh off a NCAA title in the 60-meter hurdles, was named a United States Track & Field and Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) First Team All-American on Monday. Eaton became the first SU track and field student-athlete to capture a NCAA individual championship last weekend in Nampa, Idaho. In addition, senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong was named a Second Team All-American following her participation in the 60-meter dash.
"Both Coach (Dave) Hegland and myself are very proud of Jarret for his outstanding season," said head coach Chris Fox. "The All American honor was earned and deserved."
Eaton is the first All-American since Uhunoma Osazuwa earned the honor in the pentathlon during the 2010 indoor season, and is the first SU male indoor All-American since Adrian Woodley in 2000. To earn First Team status, a student athlete must have placed in the championships' top eight or were a member of an eight person final.
Eaton won the NCAA title with a time of 7.54 seconds, winning the event by 0.01 seconds and knocking off defending champion Andrew Riley of Illinois. The victory completed a perfect season for Eaton, who won every race he competed in during the 2012 campaign.
"We are tremendously proud of Jarret and all he accomplished this indoor season," Hegland said. "So many people were happy to see him win, not because of who he is as an athlete but because of who he is as a person. We're extremely fortunate that he chose to attend Syracuse, and so thankful for all he's done for our program and university. We look forward to his continued pursuit of excellence during the outdoor season."
Eaton was named the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Male Track Athlete of the Year last weekend, marking the second time in three seasons that he has claimed that honor. Eaton was also named the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week twice this season, and is currently on the Watch List for the Bowerman Award, which is awarded annually to the top male and female track and field athletes.
Eaton broke his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles twice this season, and also set a meet-record at the BIG EAST Championship with a 7.70 second sprint in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. In addition, his time of 7.49 seconds at the Penn State Invitational was the fastest collegiate time of the season, the fifth fastest world time of the season, and the second fastest collegiate time ever recorded.
