BIG EAST BEASTS
Syracuse has never lost a BIG EAST Conference game. The Orange is 13-0 all-time since the start of league play. The Orange posted 6-0 conference records in 2010 and 2011 to win the regular-season league championship. Syracuse is 1-0 against BIG EAST foes so far in 2012.
The Orange is averaging 12.8 goals per game all-time in BIG EAST play and has outscored its conference foes cumulatively, 166-80.
AGAINST THE UNRANKED
Syracuse boasts a 59-2 record against unranked opponents under head coach John Desko and the team has won 25 straight versus non-ranked foes. The last time the Orange lost to an unranked squad was on April 28, 2007 at Massachusetts. The Minutemen recorded a 9-7 decision against SU that day. The only other unranked opponent to beat the Orange on Desko's watch was Hobart (9-8) on March 28, 2006.
THE FRIENDLY CONFINES
Syracuse currently owns the fifth-longest home winning streak in Division I lacrosse. The Orange has won its last six at the Carrier Dome, including a pair of victories over Albany and Army to start the 2012 season. The Orange's last home loss was an 11-6 decision against Cornell on April 12, 2011. Virginia's 14-game current home winning streak tops the list.
MALTZ NAMED TO BIG EAST HONOR ROLL AGAIN
For the second time in three weeks, sophomore Derek Maltz was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Maltz tied his career high with three goals in SU's loss at Johns Hopkins on March 17 and was recognized by the conference on March 19.
For the season, Maltz leads the Orange in points (16) and goals (12). In addition, he has the best shooting percentage (.387, 12-31) of anyone on the team that has attempted at least 10 shots.
EILERS, SCHOONMAKER RIDING GOAL STREAKS
After not scoring a goal in SU's first two games, senior midfielder Bobby Eilers has four goals in the last three outings. Eilers found the cage once at Virginia, twice at St. John's and once at Johns Hopkins.
Redshirt freshman Henry Schoonmaker also has scored once in each of the last three games.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars have lost their last two since knocking off Wagner, 13-5, on Feb. 25 for their only win of the year. Providence is averaging 8.25 goals per game and sports an identical team goals-against average (8.25). The team's most effective offensive weapon has been its extra-man unit. The Friars rank 10th nationally in EMO success at (50 pct., 7-14).
Senior attackman Jake Nolan leads Providence in all three major offensive categories with six goals, four assists and 10 points. Nolan did not play in the team's BIG EAST opener against Georgetown on March 17. Andrew Barton is the Friars' other top offensive threat. Barton has five goals and three assists on the season.
Starting goalie Christian Dzwilewski is the reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Dzwilewski made 16 saves and posted a .696 save percentage in the loss to Georgetown. For the season, Dzwilewski ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals-against average (9.60) and save percentage (.548).
Head coach Chris Burdick is in his 14th season at the Providence helm. Burdick, a native of Cortland, N.Y., owns an 84-125 career coaching record. He guided Providence to three NCAA Tournament appearances while a member of the MAAC and was named the 2008 MAAC Coach of the Year. The Friars joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2010, but have yet to win a league game (0-13).
