SU Opens Conference Play at St. John’s

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The #25/rv Syracuse University softball team (19-8) jumps into conference play this weekend with a trio of games against St. John's (12-19) at the Red Storm Softball Field.

The Orange is currently on a nine game winning streak and has appeared in the national rankings in back-to-back weeks for the first time in program history. SU has played six teams currently ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 and has beaten two of those teams (Michigan and Baylor).

Lisaira Daniels continues to lead the Syracuse offensive charge. Daniels is the team leader with a .370 batting average and is tied for second in the BIG EAST with six home runs. In conference, Daniels also ranks third in stolen bases (10), fourth in total bases (55) and fifth in runs scored (21).

Pitcher Jenna Caira has won her last 11 starts to improve her overall record to 14-3. She boasts a 1.58 ERA and has registered 114 strikeouts in 106.2 innings of work. Relief pitcher Lindsay Taylor is also putting together a solid campaign. The freshman carries an ERA of 1.24 in 39.2 innings pitched. Collectively, the SU pitching staff has a 1.81 ERA which ranks 25th nationally.

Jackie Reed and Kristina Cady pace the SJU offense as they bat .367 and .365, respectively. Reed is the team leader with 36 hits, while Cady is one behind her with 35. Cady has crossed the plate a team-best 24 times.

SU holds a 13-7 series advantage against St. John's and has won the last three contests. The Orange is 6-5 in BIG EAST conference openers.

First pitch on Saturday is set for 12:00 p.m. with game two of the double header scheduled for approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one. First pitch on Sunday is also scheduled for noon.
