NIAGARA, N.Y. – Syracuse track and field alumni Chester A. Bowman and Steven J. Dering are two of 10 individuals who will be inducted into the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame on March 31 at the Diplomat Banquet Center in Rochester, N.Y.
Bowman, a 1925 SU graduate, finished fourth at the 1924 Olympic Games in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.9 seconds (estimated). A three-time US National Champion, he captured the 60-yard dash title in both 1926 (6.2 seconds) and 1930 (6.4 seconds), while also winning the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.6 seconds on July 2, 1927. His 100-yard dash time matched the World Record, American record and meet record.
Bowman also ran the lead-off leg as part of the world record holding 4x110 relay team at the Newark AC in Lincoln, Neb. in July of 1927. During his time with the Orange, Bowman was a two-time IC4A Champion and set a US Olympic Trials record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.1 seconds on June 13, 1924.
Dering, who graduated from Syracuse in 1991, was a six-time BIG EAST Champion in the 35-pound weight throw, capturing the indoor title in 1990 and 1991. He also won four straight hammer throw outdoor titles from 1988-91. His school outdoor record of 65.81-meters in the hammer throw is still standing. Dering's junior season was arguably his most successful campaign as the Albany, N.Y. native captured Penn Relay, Colonial Relay and IC4A Championships in the weight throw. He was also a US Junior Champion in the event in 1988.
