NEW ORLEANS – After a strong beginning to the 2012 outdoor season, the Syracuse track and field team has caught the attention of the Northeast. Both SU squads have entered the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Northeast Regional Polls, with the men in seventh and women in fifth.
The Orange went in four different directions in the opening weekend of the outdoor season to compete against some of the nation's elite teams. On the men's side, Jarret Eaton finished second overall in the 110-meter hurdles (13.75) at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala. while Robert Molke placed third in the 10000-meter run at 29:35.72 at the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J. Both marks were good for qualification into the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in Tampa, Fla. on May 4-6.
In the field, Frank Taylor and Will Watson finished 14th (6.77-meters) and 15th (6.76-meters) in the long jump at Auburn, and Adam Harris placed fifth in both the shot put (13.96-meters) and discus (43.47-meters) at the Cornell Spring Invitational in Ithaca.
On the women's side, the SU distance runners stole the show at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., where Heather Stephens finished eighth in her 3000-meter steeplechase heat with a time of 10:11.51, and Molly Malone placed ninth overall in her section of the 1500-meter run at 4:26.47.
Ieva Staponkute got off to a strong start in the triple jump by finishing sixth at the Tiger Track Classic (12.11-meters), good for BIG EAST Championship qualification.
The Orange will be back in action this weekend as SU travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the UNC Kent Taylor/Joe Hilton Invitational, which gets underway on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
