
Heather Stephens has the nation's top time in the 3000-meter steeplechase through the first weekend of the outdoor season

After posting stellar results at four different competitions last weekend, Syracuse track and field made their mark on the national rankings with seven athletes currently in the top-20 in their respective events.
Senior Heather Stephens led the Orange through the first weekend of competition as the top collegiate finisher in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational, finishing with a time of 10:11.51. Stephens is coming off a 2011 outdoor season which saw her podium at the BIG EAST Championships with a third place finish in the same event (10:20.66) to earn All-BIG EAST status.
Closely behind Stephens are Katie Hursey and Natalie Busby, who ranked 12th and 20th in the nation, respectively. Hursey's time of 10:18.19 has her at second in the conference and eighth in the region, while Busby is fourth in the BIG EAST and 12th in the region after her time of 10:20.90.
In the 10,000-meter run at Stanford, sophomore Sarah Pagano brought in a time of 33:45.05 which was good for 16th in the nation and fifth in the region.
Tito Medrano, who won his second straight BIG EAST Championship in the 10000-meter run last season, continued to dominate the event in Palo Alto, Calif., running a time of 29:07.73, which is currently 11th in the nation and tops among BIG EAST runners. Trailing close behind Medrano is fellow senior Pat Dupont, whose 10000-meter time of 29:14.83 is second in the conference and 16th nationally.
Following a national championship winning indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles, senior Jarret Eaton lengthened his stride to the 110-meter hurdles, running a time of 13.75 that ranks 10th nationally and fifth in the region.
This weekend the Orange will venture to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in the UNC Kent Taylor/Joe Hilton Invitational. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and track events at 1:30 p.m.
