SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 13 Syracuse men's crew begins its cup season on Saturday when it hosts the Goes Trophy against Cornell and Navy. SU's lone home regatta of the spring begins at 8 a.m. at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse near Long Branch Park.
It will be a clash of ranked crews at the Onondaga Lake outlet as the Orange moved up one spot to No. 13 in this week's USRowing Collegiate Poll, while Navy ranks seventh and Cornell is 11th.
Fans that cannot make it to the Ten Eyck Boathouse can follow the regatta broadcast on the phone at (712) 432-4418 or online at Stretch Internet. The race broadcasts are made possible by the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA).
The Orange is defending its 2011 Goes Trophy victory and has won four of the last six. SU has not finished worse than second in those six years. Overall, the Orange has won 17 of its last 21 cup races, dating back to 2006.
The racing will kick off on Saturday with the marquee event, the varsity eight, at 8 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight, frosh eight, third varsity eight and second frosh eight in 20-minute increments.
Syracuse began its spring season with its annual scrimmage at Princeton on March 31. Dave Reischman's crew posted a strong showing in the 2K as the varsity eight finished second to No. 4 Princeton and just under seven seconds ahead of No. 15 Georgetown.
The Big Red swept all six of its races at the 25th annual George Washington Invitational Regatta last Saturday. The varsity eight beat Georgetown by 1.1 seconds on the Potomac River course.
Navy was also at the GW Invitational last week, and like the Big Red, swept all of its races. Highlighting the Midshipmen's eight victories was the varsity eight's open-water 17-second victory over Holy Cross.
The Goes Trophy has been contested by the Orange, Big Red and Midshipmen since 1956. It was created by Clifford “Tip” Goes, SU Class of 1914, in 1955 go honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. Goes coxed the Syracuse varsity eight that won the IRA Regatta in 1913.
Syracuse heads to Boston next Saturday for the Conlan Cup against Boston University and Columbia on the Charles River.
