Eaton Claims 110-M Hurdle Victory At UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Jarret Eaton took the gold in the men's 110-meter hurdles at the UNC Kent Taylor/Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel, Hill. N.C. on Saturday. Eaton's time of 13.77 seconds won the event by 0.34 seconds, while Matt Callanan (seventh; 14.69), Amadou Gueye (eighth, 14.78) and Darren McCluskey (11th, 15.32) also competed in the event.
“The team competed well,” assistant coach Dave Hegland said. “We saw a lot of things we can improve open before the championship portion of our season. We have traveled south for the past two weeks, and now most athletes will have a week off as we take some time to train for the BIG EAST Championship.”
Frank Taylor continued his successful start to the 2012 outdoor campaign with a second place finish overall in the long jump (7.22m), while teammate Will Watson was 11th with a leap of 6.47m.
Jaquan Holland led three Orange runners in the 100-meter dash with Holland finishing fifth (10.91) while Jihaad Howard placed seventh (11.11) and Sham Lewis in 13th (11.26). Holland also competed in the 200-meter, finishing second (21.66 seconds).
On the women's side, freshman Klarrisa Ricks led a trio of Orange in the women's long jump with a 5.87m mark, good for fifth place, while Ashley Keyes (5.39m) and Ieva Staponkute (5.35m) finished 10th and 11th, respectively.
Staponkute had better results in the triple jump with the top collegiate finish of the day, and second overall, at 12.13m.
Flings Owusu-Agyapong placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.76 seconds, just 0.16 seconds behind Trisha Hawthorne. Ricks (12.63) and Keyes (12.66) also ran in the event, placing eighth and 10th, respectively. Owusu-Agyapong also ran in the 200-meters, finishing eighth (24.81 seconds).
The Orange will be back on the track next weekend for the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. and the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
