ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Alyssa Murray recorded seven points to lead No. 2/2 Syracuse to a 16-9 victory at No. 13/13 Cornell (8-4) in Ithaca, N.Y. on Tuesday, April 17. The Orange (11-2) has now won 10 consecutive games for its longest winning streak since the 2008 season.
Murray tallied four goals and three assists to pace Syracuse's attack. Sophomore Katie Webster and freshman Kailah Kempney each had a hat trick, while junior Michelle Tumolo (Mullica Hill, N.J.) finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
Webster started the scoring with a hard shot from the left side 1:15 into the game. The teams traded goals before freshman Gabby Jaquith scored on an assist from Webster, which sparked the Orange on a 7-0 scoring run that gave Syracuse a 9-1 lead at the 7:38 mark. Kempney gathered a loose ball in front of the crease and found the back of the net with her shot before Webster scored on an assist from Tumolo. Murray, senior Sarah Holden and Tumolo scored unassisted goals before freshman #Devon Collins# capped the run with a goal on an assist from Murray that gave SU its largest lead of the first half. Caroline Salisbury netted her second and third goals of the half for Cornell to cut the Orange's lead to 10-3 at intermission.
Murray scored three of Syracuse's first four goals of the second half as it took its largest lead of the game at 14-5 with 17:20 to play. The squads traded goals before the Big Red netted the final two goals of the contest for the 16-9 final.
The Syracuse defense limited its opponent to less than 10 goals for the sixth time this season and held Cornell's leading scorer, Jessi Steinberg scorless on just three shots. The Orange outshot the Big Red, 39-29, and picked up 16 ground balls to 11 for Cornell. In addition, Syracuse won 15-of-27 draw controls.
Sophomore Alyssa Costantino made four saves in goal for the Orange in the first half, while freshman Kelsey Richardson had eight saves after intermission. Caroline Salisbury led Cornell with three goals and an assist, while Kyla Dambach and Carly Gniewek combined for nine saves for the Big Red.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST play this weekend when it goes on the road to face Louisville on Friday, April 20 and Cincinnati on Sunday, April 22.
