Men's Crew Seeks Conlan Cup In Boston

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Conlan Cup will be on the line Saturday as the No. 13 Syracuse men's crew travels to Boston to take on No. 12 Boston University and No. 14 Columbia on the Charles River.
The Orange is looking to reclaim the Conlan Cup, which is awarded annually to the winner of the SU-BU race. The Terriers took last season's race, snapping a five-year run for the Orange. The race is named after Bill Conlan, the founder of the BU rowing program. SU has won the cup 14 times in 25 years.
Also being contested on Saturday will be the Lusins Cup, raced for annually by the Terriers and Lions.
Racing begins at 7:42 a.m. with the frosh eight, followed by the second varsity at 8:18 a.m., the varsity eight at 8:54 a.m. and the second frosh eight at 9:42 a.m.
The Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA) will be providing free audio coverage of the races. Fans can listen by either calling in (712-432-4418) or online.
The course begins near the Longfellow Bridge and finishes just down river from the BU Boathouse. The best viewing for fans will be along the Cambridge shore.
For the second week in a row, Dave Reischman's SU crew checks in at No. 13 in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, while the Terriers are one spot ahead at No. 12 and the Lions are just behind the Orange at No. 14.
The Syracuse varsity eight is coming off a third place finish in a close Goes Trophy race at home against No. 7 Navy and No. 11 Cornell last Saturday. The Orange, coxed by Isaac Budmen and stroked by Aidan Barrett, finished in a time of 5:52.0. The Midshipmen won their first Goes since 2005 in a time of 5:48.3 while the Big Red finished in 5:50.2.
SU's second varsity eight made a strong move in the second half of the race and finished second in 6:20.9, less than a second behind Cornell (5:49.7) and 4.4 seconds ahead of Navy (5:54.8).
The Terriers are coming off a Bill Cup victory over No. 15 Dartmouth last weekend. BU swept all three races, including an open-water win in the V8 by 5.9 seconds.
The Lions are coming off a second-place finish at the Blackwell Cup last weekend. Columbia's V8 finished 6.4 seconds behind Yale and ahead of Penn by 2.7 ticks.
Saturday's regatta serves as the Orange's final tune-up before the Eastern Sprints, the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges's championship, on May 13 at Regatta Point on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Packard Cup against Dartmouth on May 20 will follow, leading up to the IRA Regatta on May 31-June 2.
