Game Notes
NIAGARA, N.Y. – The Syracuse University softball team (38-12) kicks off the final week of the regular-season with a Tuesday doubleheader at in-state foe Niagara. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
Searching for its second-consecutive 40-win season, Syracuse plays these two games with the Purple Eagles before finishing the season with No. 18 USF at the SU Softball Stadium for senior weekend.
A CLOSER LOOK AT SYRACUSE:
With her second strikeout in the finale against Connecticut on Sunday, Jenna Caira became the first pitcher in BIG EAST history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts. Arguably the most dominating pitcher in conference history, Caira has shattered every SU pitching record, and is seven victories shy of 100 in her career.
The Orange capped off a 4-1 week by rallying past UConn for a 4-3, 10 inning victory and the series sweep. Twice last week (once against DePaul), the Orange hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning when trailing to force extra innings.
Against the Blue Demons, Veronica Grant tied it up with a solo shot in the seventh, while Stephanie Watts hit the two-run bomb in the ninth to give SU a 5-3 victory. Lisaira Daniels provided the dramatics with a game-tying HR in the seventh against UConn. Julie Wambold then singled in Watts for the 10 inning victory.
EXAMINING THE STATS:
The Orange has been on fire since the calendar hit March. Since then, SU has gone 33-7, including a record of 18-3 in the month of April. Syracuse has won all 25 games when leading after six innings, and has also rallied for five victories when trailing after the sixth.
The long ball has continued to be a weapon for the Orange this season. When SU goes yard, it owns a record of 30-4. When Syracuse out-hits its opponents, it has a record of 32-3. Most impressively, the Orange is yet to lose this season in extra innings with a perfect 5-0 record.
Fans will be able to follow the action for both games tomorrow with live stats and a live in-game blog.
