SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The two-time defending tournament champion Syracuse University softball team (40-14) was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday afternoon by St. John's, 2-1, at Melissa Cook Stadium.
Syracuse will now await its destination for the NCAA Tournament. The 64-team bracket will be revealed on Sunday evening at 10:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Red Storm threatened in the top of the second inning with one out and runners on second and third. SJU's Ellen Czuba tried a suicide squeeze, but Carey-Leigh Thomas made the out at home plate to preserve the scoreless tie.
SU was unable to capitalize with runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the third inning, and St. John's would then score the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning.
SJU's Michelle Tilson drew a lead-off walk to open the frame and reached second on a wild pitch. After a single moved Tilson to third, she crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm chased Jenna Caira from the game in the sixth inning and loaded the bases with no outs, but SU limited the damage to just one as the Red Storm scored on a wild pitch.
The Orange rallied in the sixth as Stephanie Watts walked to lead off, as did Julie Wambold two batters later. Thomas would then single home Watts to make the score 2-1. Two batters later, Morgan Nandin hit a rope that was heading for the outfield, but pitcher Ashley Beza was able to knock it down and get the final out of the inning.
After Veronica Grant singled to lead off the seventh, Lisaira Daniels also singled, but Grant was picked off trying to reach third base. A strikeout and a fly out to center field ended the threat and gave St. John's the 2-1 victory.
Daniels was 3-for-4 on the afternoon with three singles. Caira threw five innings and gave up three hits. Stacy Kuwik pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
