SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The 25/24 Syracuse University softball team (40-13, 17-5) looks to make it three-consecutive BIG EAST titles this week in South Bend, Ind. The Orange is the three-seed and will play sixth-seeded St. John's on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS:
By winning 2-of-3 against No. 19 USF on Senior Weekend, the Orange finds itself back in the national rankings. This is the first time this season SU is ranked in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball and the NFCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Orange checks in at No. 25 in the ESPN.com Poll and No. 24 in the Coaches Poll.
LAST WEEK IN RVIEW:
SU won its final series of the season against USF and in the process reached the 40-win plateau for the second-consecutive season. Jenna Caira was 2-0 with two shutouts, including her fourth career no-hitter in the series finale.
Caira was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for her performance, becoming the first player in SU history to garner that accolade. Shirley Daniels received her first-career BIG EAST recognition as she was 6-for-11 on the weekend with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Her homer in the bottom of the fifth of game one proved to be the game-winner.
LAST TIME VS. ST. JOHN'S:
The Orange had a home run derby last time SU faced St. John's earlier this season. Syracuse smacked 11 round-trippers during the three game set in Queens, including six in game three. Jasmine Watson had one of her best weekends against St. John's, going 4-for-6 at the dish with two home runs, six RBI and six walks.
WHERE SU RANKS NATIONALLY:
The Orange continues to thrive on the long ball. SU has hit 63 homers this season, which is 16 more than any team in the BIG EAST. SU has ranked in the top 15 all season for home runs per game average and this week checks in at No. 13 with a 1.19 average. Individually, Jenna Caira is seven strikeouts away from passing legendary Arizona pitcher Jenny Finch. Caira enters the weekend with 1,022 career K's, and also ranks 35th nationally with a 1.53 ERA and 16th with 258 strikeouts.
