Sham Lewis' first place finish in the 100-meter dash and Jon Aziz's victory in the 10000-meter run highlighted 23 Syracuse top-ten finishes on Sunday at the Cornell Big Red Invitational in the team's final tune-up before this weekend's BIG EAST Championship. Lewis' time of 10.91 seconds is his season best, and is the second quickest for the Orange this season.
Darren McCluskey finished fifth overall in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 seconds while Corey Robinson placed fourth in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase (9:25.50) and Frank Taylor took seventh in the long jump (7.00 meters).
The Orange dominated the 1500-meter run, claiming spots 2-4, led by Andrew Bennison (4:00.21), Joseph Kush (4:00.83) and Andrew Palmer (4:01.71). Patrick Geoghegan also recorded a top-ten finish with a time of 4:03.86, good for seventh place.
Ryan Ellis ran a season-best 1:55.80 time in the 800-meter run, pacing Sean Carney (1:56.72) with a third place finish. In the 10000-meter run, Aziz led a trio of student-athletes with top-three finishes (31:10.24) while Nick Roertgen (31:24.96) and David Wilson (31:56.76) finished in second and third, respectively.
On the women's side, Angelica Peck (4:37.49), Beth Wright (4:41.07) and Maura Linde (4:44.05) all finished in the top ten of the 1500-meter run in third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Molly Malone, who broke the indoor school record in the 800-meter run in 2012, continued to dominate the outdoor event on Sunday, finishing third overall (2:09.62).
SaDe Lewis, after finishing second in her preliminary heat of the 100-meter hurdles, returned to finish third in the championship heat with an ECAC qualifying time of 14.12 seconds while Sabrina Cammock placed seventh in the 100-meter dash (12.45 seconds).
In the field, Ashley Keyes placed third overall in the long jump (5.60 meters), just 0.09 meters behind Cornell's Anjelique Parnell.
Syracuse will travel to Tampa, Fla. this weekend for the conference championships. Last season, the Orange women finished seventh in the outdoor championships while the men's team took ninth.
