SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A spot in the national semifinals is on the line when No. 4/4 Syracuse (17-3) hosts No. 5/5 North Carolina (15-3) in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, May 19. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Tickets for Saturday's game are $8 for adults and $5 for youth ages 12 and under. Syracuse and North Carolina students can purchase tickets for $5 with a valid school ID. Parking will be available in the Dome West lots for $5.
Fans in the Syracuse area can follow the action live on WJPZ 89.1FM. Live audio and video will also be available on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com for no charge.
ORANGE IN THE QUARTERS
Syracuse is making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals since 2007. SU is 2-2 in its previous four second-round games. The Orange advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in 2007 where it lost to eventual national champion Northwestern.
In 2008, Syracuse hosted the quarterfinals for the first time. The Orange defeated North Carolina to advance to the national semifinals for the first time in school history. The next season, SU lost in the second round at Maryland, which went on to win the national title.
Most recently, Syracuse played in the quarterfinals in 2010. After winning at Georgetown in the first round, the Orange traveled to Harrisonburg, Va. to face James Madison. Syracuse shutout the Dukes in the second half and recorded a 7-3 victory.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse won its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament first-round game with a 15-5 victory against Dartmouth on Sunday, May 13 in the Carrier Dome. Senior Sarah Holden tied her career high with four goals to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Orange.
With the score tied at 3-3, Holden gave Syracuse the lead for good with the first goal of the second half at the 23:50 mark. Sophomore Amy Cross added a goal before Dartmouth cut SU's lead to 5-4 with 18:03 remaining.
Sophomore Katie Webster netted her first goal of the day at the 17:04 mark to spark the Orange on a 6-0 scoring run that gave SU an 11-4 lead with 8:31 to play. Dartmouth's Kirsten Goldberg temporarily halted Syracuse's scoring outburst when she converted a free position attempt with 7:31 on the clock, but the Orange answered with four consecutive goals on its way to victory.
Sophomore Alyssa Murray also tallied four goals, while junior Bridget Daley tied her career high with three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals with a 14-7 victory against Navy in the first round. The Tar Heels enter Saturday's contest with a 15-3 record.
UNC features a balanced scoring attack as four different players have scored 40 or more points. Becky Lynch leads the way with 61 points, while Laura Zimmerman is right behind with 58 points. Abbey Friend leads the team with 49 goals and has 57 points this season. Lynch and Zimmerman are tied for the team lead with 20 assists apiece.
Lauren Maksym has started all 18 games in goal for the Tar Heels. She has a 7.38 goals-against average and .462 save percentage.
Jenny Levy is in her 17th season at North Carolina. She has led the Tar Heels to three consecutive NCAA Tournament semifinal appearances.
THE SERIES
The series between Syracuse and North Carolina is tied at 1-1. Both meetings have been in NCAA Tournament play.
The squads faced each other for the first time in the first round of the 2001 national tournament in Chapel Hill. Syracuse trailed 10-4 at halftime, but rallied in the second half with three consecutive goals to cut the Tar Heels lead to 12-9 with 6:33 remaining. UNC responded with two goals in the final five minutes to seal a 14-9 victory.
Syracuse hosted North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2008 NCAA Tournament in the Carrier Dome. The Tar Heels took their first lead of the game at 10-9 lead with 9:50 to play. Following an SU timeout, the Orange scored three straight goals to take the lead for good. UNC cut the lead to one, but Syracuse sealed the victory when goalkeeper Liz Hogan three a 55-yard clearing pass to Jackie DePetris, who scored an open-net goal with 55 seconds remaining for the 13-11 final. The win gave Syracuse a spot in the national semifinals for the first time in school history.
