
BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year Michelle Tumolo and Coach of the Year Gary Gait

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Michelle Tumolo earned the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Attack Player of the Year and Gary Gait was named the league's Coach of the Year at the BIG EAST Conference Awards Banquet held Thursday, May 2 in Syracuse, N.Y. Tumolo was also one of a school-record nine members of the Orange to earn all-conference honors.
Tumolo, junior Becca Block and sophomore Alyssa Murray were unanimous selections to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Sophomore Katie Webster was also named to the all-conference first team for the second consecutive year. Five members of the Orange were chosen to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, including seniors Sarah Holden and Janelle Stegeland, junior Linley Block, sophomore Alyssa Costantino and freshman Kailah Kempney. The nine all-conference members were the most for any school.
Tumolo, who makes her second appearance on the All-BIG EAST First Team, leads the Orange in assists (39) and ranks second in points (79) and goals (40). Earlier this season she became only the second player in school history to record 200 points and 100 assists in her career. Tumolo is among the nation's leaders in assists this season. She ranks 10th in assists per game (2.44) and 12th in total assists.
Gait is the BIG EAST Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. He guided the Orange to its highest ranking in school history and its fifth regular-season title in the last six years in 2012. Syracuse went undefeated in BIG EAST play for the second time in school history with an 8-0 mark. SU enters the BIG EAST Tournament on a 14-game winning streak, the longest in school history.
Murray leads the Orange and the BIG EAST in scoring this season with 87 points, which is the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. She ranks fifth in the nation in points as well as goals (3.47) and points (5.12) per game. In addition, her 59 goals are the fifth-highest total in the country. Murray set the single-game school record with eight in Syracuse's season opener against Boston College.
Becca Block has anchored a Syracuse defensive unit that has held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 10 games this season. She leads the team with 28 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers and ranks second with 41 draw controls. Block, a second-team all-conference selection last season, also has 11 points on seven goals and four assists.
Webster is making her second appearance on the All-BIG EAST First Team. She has recorded at least one goal in every game this season and ranks third on the team in scoring with 47 points. Webster has tallied three or more goals five times in 2012. In addition, she has recorded a career-high 14 assists.
Holden has played in every game this season and ranks fifth on the team in points (32) and goals (24). She also has dished out a career-high eight assists. Holden scored a season-high three goals in SU's double-overtime win at Florida and against Cincinnati.
Stegeland has been a three-year starter on defense for the Orange. This season she has helped Syracuse to the lowest goals-against average in the BIG EAST. Stegeland is tied for second on the team in ground balls (19) and ranks third in caused turnovers (9).
Linley Block has started every game on defense this season for Syracuse. She has recorded 14 ground balls, 13 draw controls and three caused turnovers this season. In addition, she has posted nine points on two goals and seven assists.
In her first year as a starter, Costantino leads the nation in save percentage (.528) and ranks sixth in goals-against average (7.99). She leads the BIG EAST in both categories. Costantino recorded a career-high 13 saves in SU's double-overtime win at Florida. She followed that performance with 10 saves in the Orange's victory at Maryland.
Kempney broke Syracuse's single-season draw controls record with 67 this season. She leads the BIG EAST and ranks fifth in the nation in that category. Kempney is tied for third on the squad in goals (33) and ranks fourth in points (34). She has scored multiple goals in 10 of the 13 games she has played in this season.
No. 2/2 Syracuse begins its quest for a third BIG EAST Tournament title on Thursday when it takes on Georgetown in the second semifinal at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. Notre Dame and Loyola meet in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
