Coach Ross on facing ASU in Tempe Regional Finals
TEMPE, Ariz. – Jasmine Watson's home run in the top of the eighth inning propelled the No. 25 Syracuse University softball team (42-15) past Long Beach State (29-25), 2-1, on Saturday night at Farrington Stadium.
The Orange will now play No. 2 Arizona State in the finals of the Tempe Regional with a berth to the Super Regional on the line. Syracuse will have to win two games against the Sun Devils to win the Regional. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m. PST/6:00 p.m. EST.
Syracuse handed LBSU both of its losses this weekend which knocked the 49ers out of the NCAA Tournament. SU is now 6-1 in extra inning contests.
The Orange took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning when Veronica Grant crossed the plate. Grant singled and reached second on a throwing error. Three batters later, freshman Julie Wambold doubled off the right field wall for her team-high 34th RBI of the season.
Long Beach State recorded its only two hits of the game in the fourth inning, including a solo home run by Karli Sandoval which tied the game at 1-1.
After the fourth inning, Syracuse would only allow two 49ers to reach base, neither of which made it past first base. Starter Stacy Kuwik pitched five strong innings, allowing the two LBSU hits and striking out two batters. Jenna Caira pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit while striking out two batters for her 26th victory of the season.
Watson then provided the heroics as she absolutely crushed the offering from Erin Jones-Wesley over the left field fence. Watson's shots was documented as one of the longest home runs in Farrington Stadium history as her ball cleared two fences and hit the gymnastics building on the other side of the dirt lot.
“We showed some mental toughness tonight,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “As I have said before, we are a home run hitting team and we will live or die with the long ball. Jasmine had a tough day at the plate, but when she gets a hold of one, she can hit it as far as anyone in the country.”
