JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Jarret Eaton ran a career best 13.51 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to qualify for the national quarterfinal on day two of the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla. Katie Hursey grabbed the final qualifying spot in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, advancing to the national semifinal in Des Moines, Iowa.
Eaton won his heat by 0.15 seconds, and was 0.01 seconds away from tying Adrain Woodley's school record. Amadou Gueye was fourth in the heat at 14.00 seconds to also qualify for the national quarterfinal, and Matthew Callanan finished 44th overall (14.38 seconds).
Hursey's time of 10:12.60 was good for 12th overall and fifth in her heat. Rebekah MacKay (26th; 10:25.81), Heather Stephens (28th; 10:26.95), Natalie Busby (10:39.82) and Erin Cawley (40th; 10:41.42) also competed for SU.
In the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, Joseph Whelan finished eighth in his heat, and 17th overall, with a collegiate best time of 8:53.53.
Sophomore Molly Malone competed in the 800-meter run, finishing 17th overall (2:08.65) while Flings Owusu-Agyapong competed in the national quarterfinal of the women's 100-meter dash, finishing 26th overall at 11.74 seconds.
Competition in Jacksonville will continue on Saturday with the men's 100-meter hurdle quarterfinals and the men's and women's 5000-meter run.
