JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Jarret Eaton broke the Syracuse school record in the 110-meter hurdles in the national quarterfinals of the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla. Eaton's time of 13.44 seconds beat Adrian Woodley's mark of 13.50 set in 2010. Lauren Penney also advanced to the national final in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:24.96.
Eaton now owns both the outdoor 110-meter hurdle and indoor 60-meter hurdles record. The 2012 NCAA indoor national champion in the 60-meter hurdles finished 0.03 seconds behind Florida's Devon Hill to advance to the national semifinal in Des Moines, Iowa. Amadou Gueye also competed in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 20th overall (14.09 seconds).
In the men's 5000-meter hurdles, Martin Hehir finished ninth in his heat, and 22nd overall, with a time of 14:23.34. On the women's side, Penney finished ninth overall to lead two Orange student-athletes. Brenna Symoniak also competed for SU, finishing 41st overall (17:21.05).
Eaton and Penney will join Katie Hursey, Tito Medrano and Sarah Pagano at the NCAA Championship on June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
