INDIANAPOLIS – Five members of the Syracuse track and field team will travel to Des Moines, Iowa next week for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Jarret Eaton, Katie Hursey, Tito Medrano, Sarah Pagano and Lauren Penney will all represent SU on June 6-9 at Drake University.
Eaton, a redshirt senior from Abington, Pa., is coming off a school record time of 13.44 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. Eaton advanced to the national semifinals after running a time of 13.50 seconds in the preliminary heats before finishing second overall in the quarterfinals on Saturday. He finished just 0.03 seconds behind Miami's Devon Hill, and has the fifth fastest time in the nation this season.
Eaton, the 2012 BIG EAST 110-meter hurdle Champion, is looking to pick up his second national title of the season after capturing the indoor 60-meter hurdles crown in March.
Hursey clocked in with the final qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last weekend at the NCAA East Preliminary round (10:12.60). The Hampstead, Md. native trailed for the first half of the race before making up substantial ground in the final meters to secure the spot in the national semifinal. Hursey has the 15th fastest time heading into the race, and is one of two BIG EAST representatives in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Medrano (Lafayette, Ind.) finished second overall in the 10,000-meter run (30:05.75) last weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. to reach the national final for the second straight season. He finished 12th last year at the national championship to earn Second Team All-American honors. Medrano has the sixth quickest time in the 10,000-meter hurdles in the 24-athlete field.
Pagano (Ringwood, N.J.) edged Cornell's Devin McMahon by 1.39 seconds in the 10,000-meter run to qualify for the national final, which will take place on June 7 at 9:45 p.m. (ET). The 2012 BIG EAST Champion in the 10,000-meters, Pagano has a season-best time of 33:45.05 at the Stanford Invitational.
Penney will compete for the national title in the women's 5,000-meter run on June 9 after finishing ninth overall in the preliminary heat last weekend (16:24.96). The Succasunna, N.J. native holds the school record in the 5,000-meter run (16:09.44), and is one of seven BIG EAST student-athletes in the field.
ESPN3.com will broadcast the national championship on June 7-9, while ESPNU will air live coverage on June 9 beginning at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
